Polio Update – The work continues
Day one of the Subnational Immunization Days in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, a weeklong campaign to vaccinate children against polio. Rotarians, Rotaractors, health workers, and other volunteers set up and operate more than 1,500 immunization booths in the area. 23 June 2019.

2019 has been a tough year for Polio Cases in the world

  • 163 total cases of the wild polio virus reported vs 33 total cases in 2018
  • 135 cases in Pakistan in 2019 vs 12 in 2018
  • 28 cases in Afghanistan in 2019 vs 21 in 2018

The following is a message posted by our RI Polio Plus Committee Chair Mike McGovern:

“Dear Rotary Friends, I was reading in other posts some despair that we had 165 cases of the wild polio virus in 2019 after just 33 in 2018. It is disappointing but I am reminded that India had 66 cases in 2005, rising to 874 in 2007 before steadily dropping to 1 in 2011. We are all hoping that Pakistan and Afghanistan follow a similar but quicker and less severe pattern with a drop beginning in 2020”.

Pakistan & Afghanistan continue to be at the center of our Global Polio Eradication Initiative. We all need to stay optimistic.
