Polio Update – February 2020

On his recent visit to Pakistan, The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, made the following comments regarding the polio eradication efforts taking place in Pakistan: “Polio is one of the few diseases we can eradicate in the world in the next few years.

Following are the Wild Polio Cases Reported as of February 19, 2020:

Total: 17 vs 6 in same period in 2019

Afghanistan: 0 vs 2 in same period in 2019

Pakistan: 17 vs 4 in same period in 2019

This is a priority of the United Nations and I am extremely happy to see it is a clear priority for the Government of Pakistan. My appeal to all leaders, religious leaders, community leaders, is to fully support the Government of Pakistan and other governments around the world to make sure that we will be able to fully eradicate polio.”
