Vanessa Denney, M.Ed. has served CCSD for 19 years. She is the founding Principal at Early College High School, which opened in 2017. The award-winning high school provides college access to traditionally underrepresented groups; working to change the trajectory of students’ lives and positively impact the Charleston community. The first-ever high school graduating class from the school boasted a 41% Associate Degree completion rate.
Passionate about serving students from diverse backgrounds, she taught in Hollywood, SC, then became an Instructional Coach and Administrator at Alice Birney Middle School. In an Instructional Leadership role at Burke High School, she provided experiences that forged students’ paths to college and careers. She gained district-level experience as the SLC CTE Coordinator; supporting three high schools: Burke, St. John’s, and Stall. While an Assistant Principal at North Charleston High School, Vanessa strengthened students’ experiences by expanding CTE offerings and led efforts resulting in a 12.46% increase in the graduation rate.
Vanessa serves as a member of the Charleston Shared Future team and is on the Board of Computers With A Cause.
Vanessa holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from The College of Charleston, a Master’s Degree from The Citadel, and a Certificate in Education Finance from Georgetown University.
When not working, Vanessa enjoys gardening and feeding the bluebirds in her yard with her husband and young daughter.
